Shinn Asuka possesses the SEED factor, which he unleashed it in episode 12. The SEED factor seems to extend the pilot's limit, but under extreme stress. For instance, Shinn was almost defeated by the mobile armor. The Impulse had lost power and was about to plunge into the sea, when Shinn went into SEED mode. He got control of his mobile suit and was able to get it recharged and defeat the enemy. While in SEED mode, their eyes change. There is no reflection of light; just the color of their eyes and the small pupil.
I believe there are different levels of SEED mode. The one Shinn and Kira (around the beginning of GSEED) possessed was invoked by the need to defeat the enemy. They were under pressure/stress. They believed it was all or nothing. The other level is possessed by Athrun and the more mature Kira. They tapped into the SEED, which extended their limits. The difference is that this level, they aren't being spontaneous. They know when to use it.
I took notice of this when the animation of the SEED bursting was different. The above animation is the one Shinn and Kira had. Then I noticed Athrun's and later on Kira's are different. Their SEED burst with a red light. Below is the animation of the red light burst.
